Grow a Spine
Year:
2021
Materials:
rattan weave panels
Location:
Singapore Night Festival (construction cancelled due to COVID-19)
"Grow a Spine" is a light sculpture inspired by the elegant form and gentle twists of the human spine. Rising gracefully, it combines traditional bamboo weaving techniques with computational logic, elevating a craft traditionally used for smaller objects like wicker baskets to a striking architectural scale.
Crafted from sustainably farmed bamboo from Borneo, the project supports eco-friendly agricultural practices as an alternative to destructive "slash and burn" methods. Bamboo plantations provide a sustainable source of income for farmers while contributing to forest preservation and combating the haze issues affecting Singapore.
The sculpture not only highlights the aesthetic and functional potential of bamboo but also underscores its role in promoting sustainable development. By merging traditional craftsmanship with modern computational design, "Grow a Spine" reimagines the possibilities of material and form while championing environmental responsibility.
