Inverted Cathedral
Year:
2013
Materials:
Swarovski crystals, chain steel strings
Location:
Birmingham, UK
"Inverted Cathedral" is an installation that reinterprets sacred architectural elements through a contemporary lens. Crafted from thousands of Swarovski crystals, the sculpture evokes the grandeur of a cathedral’s vaulted ceilings, inverted to cascade delicately downward. Each crystal is suspended by nearly invisible wires, creating an ethereal effect as light refracts and dances through the space, offering viewers a celestial spectacle.
The work draws on the interplay between the spiritual and the physical, merging the divine aspirations of Gothic architecture with the weightless elegance of modern materiality. It invites viewers to gaze upward—or downward, as the inversion suggests—encouraging contemplation of perspective and space.
This installation transforms its surroundings into a meditative realm, blending light, shadow, and reflective brilliance. "Inverted Cathedral" is a testament to the enduring dialogue between traditional art forms and contemporary design innovation, offering a unique sensory and spiritual experience.
