SingaPlural 2019
Year:
2019
Location:
National Design Centre, Singapore
The 2019 Singaplural festival, themed Unnatural Phenomena and curated by Eugene Kosgoron's team, explored innovation through Changing Landscapes, Emerging Technologies, and Shifting Paradigms. The festival highlighted how familiar materials and technologies evolve to meet new challenges and opportunities.
Examples included Corning’s Gorilla Glass, initially designed for car windshields but transformed into a market leader for smartphone displays, and DuPont’s Tyvek, repurposed from construction to lifestyle products like bags and sneakers. Emerging technologies featured innovations such as Nervous System’s 3D-printed ceramics and MIT Media Lab’s Silk Pavilion, where silkworms acted as biological printers in a hybrid design.
Shifting Paradigms showcased game-changing designs like Herman Miller’s Aeron chair, redefining ergonomic aesthetics, and the Laban Dance Centre, which used polycarbonate to elevate architectural facades. The festival invited creatives to push boundaries by engaging with ideas and materials beyond their fields.
